With a little research, and joining a local rock club, you can safely (and legally!) find some great material for collecting. Reddit and Facebook have groups covering lapidary arts and equipment sales.
IWGMS members can share sensitive collection knowledge of local deposits with other members, which you can share in too, once a member. We also schedule fieldtrips to collection sites, for members.
